(Note: Hanging In began as a backdoor pilot about Maude becoming a congresswoman before being reworked into two failed pilots about a Black congressman before finally being reworked again into a show where Maude’s Bill Macy plays a new character who is the president of a university. Throughout all of these versions, the Maggie Gallagher, Sam Dickey, and Pinky Nolan characters from Maude remained.)
