All in the Family is a TV series that aired on CBS from January 12, 1971, to April 8, 1979 for nine seasons. It is a remake of the British sitcom Till Death Us Do Part.
Cast & Character Origins
Characters | Adapted From | Date | Episode |
---|---|---|---|
Archie Bunker*, Edith Bunker*, Gloria Stivic*, Michael “Meathead'“ Stivic* | Till Death Us Do Part | July 22, 1965 | Pilot: “Till Death Us Do Part” |
(Note: These are the names used in the American adaptation.
All in the Family had an unaired pilot called Justice for All where the Bunkers are named the Justices, Michael is named Richard, and the actors for Gloria and her husband are different. A second unaired pilot called Those Were the Days was closer to the final version though again the family is named the Justices with a son-in-law named Richard and a second set of actors (though not the final ones) were cast for Gloria and her husband.)

(Note: Typically, I would not count celebrities playing themselves as crossover or spinoff characters but the Sammy Davis Jr. who appears in Archie Bunker’s Place and The Jeffersons is the specific fictionalized “Sammy Davis Jr.” character from All in the Family.
The Archie Bunker’s Place episode “Gloria: The First Day” is a pilot for Gloria that was later repackaged as an episode of Archie Bunker’s Place in syndication. I have conflicting information as to whether this pilot actually aired on TV in 1982. It is not in continuity with the final version of Gloria.)
