Levelling up {{ currentPage ? currentPage.title : "" }}
A wizard, showing off their fantastic new powers to a group of astonished enemies.

In Whirlwind, characters can level up from level 1 to level 10. Each time your character levels up, they become more powerful and more versatile. What exactly they get from leveling up depends on what their new level is.

  • At levels 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, your character gets a new talent.

  • At levels 3, 5, 7, and 9, your character gets another attribute point. Remember, you can never increase an attribute above 3. Your proficiency bonus increases by 1 at each of these same levels - it is always equal to 1/2 your level rounded up.

  • At every level (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10), your character gains another adventure point, increasing their current and maximum adventure points by 1.

When to Level Up

In this game, you level up when you reach important milestones in the story of your campaign. Your game master will tell you when this happens, and normally you wait until the end of the session to level up so that it does not disrupt the flow of the game. Some groups prefer a faster pace of leveling up, and might level up at the end of every session of the game. Others prefer a slower pace. Talk to your game master about how frequently you should expect your character to level up.

Incremental Advance

As a precursor to leveling up, in games where characters will level up at a slower pace, a game master might reward the players with an incremental advance at the end of a session. When you get an incremental advance, you can choose to get one of the benefits you would receive from leveling up immediately (a higher proficiency bonus, a new talent, another adventure point, or another attribute point). You can only have one incremental advance between levels.
