Sinners is Ryan Coogler's unique interpretation of the classic tale involving a blues musician and the devil. The director of Black Panther ventures into the realm of horror, but his focus extends beyond mere jump scares and graphic violence. In fact, the horror aspect only fully emerges in the final thirty minutes, yet you remain engaged because the buildup is so rewarding. When the chaos does unfold, Coogler skillfully uses the intense scenes to enhance the themes he has meticulously crafted over the previous ninety minutes. Set in 1932, the film features Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return to the Mississippi Delta after spending years in Chicago's criminal underworld. With the money they've earned, the brothers aim to establish their own juke joint. They bring on a young guitarist named Sammie (Miles Caton) to join their band, despite his pastor father's disapproval, as the devout man views the blues as music of the devil.
