The protagonist of The Book of Clarence is the apostle Thomas's twin brother, who shares the same name as the book. Clarence, having gotten himself into hot water over a stupid chariot race, decides to take advantage of the "Messiah" frenzy that is currently sweeping the country. This plot not only benefits him financially but also introduces him to John the Baptist, Pontius Pilate, and Jesus. These exchanges are truly what make Samuel's film so successful; it boldly recasts the historically all-White biblical epics as a core Black story while also taking creative liberties with Christian history.
