In 1889, Francesca Cabrini found herself working at a small institution in Italy. With a burning desire to carry out her plans in China, she sought approval from Pope Leo XIII. Surprisingly, the Pope granted her permission, but with a twist. Instead of China, he asked her to establish a Catholic Mission in the bustling city of New York. Undeterred by financial constraints and a lack of assistants, Cabrini embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. She chose to set up her operations in the notorious Five Points area of NYC, a place known for its disease, crime, and vice. Alongside a disheartened priest named Fr. Morelli, Cabrini defied the skepticism of Archbishop Corrigan and other influential figures in the Catholic Church. Together with her Sisters, she breathed new life into an orphanage, providing much-needed support to impoverished Italian children through food, clothing, and education.
