During the mid-2000s, young Doris from Clearwater, Florida, embarks on a journey of self-discovery while her brother Max fights bravely against brain cancer. Mother of Doris, Kristine, is struggling with this trying experience and is finding it hard to cope with life in general. As a result, she begins acting violently against everyone, including her own daughter. Kristine is under even more pressure to be with her son in a facility that also cares for Terri Schiavo when Max's time comes to go to Suncoast for hospice care. Protesters consequently gather in front of the hospital. Doris is faced with a challenging situation where her mother is showing less tolerance for nursing care.
