Air travel is the preferred method of getting from point A to point B for millions of people each day in the United States and around the world. Today’s airplanes, helicopters and other aerial vehicles are safer and more fuel-efficient than ever, and the future looks bright for those wishing to take to the skies.
Below are three predictions for the future of air travel around the globe:
1. Electric Planes
Electric vehicles have become a reality on the road, but electric planes may be the next big thing in aviation. An electric plane works on the same principles as an electric vehicle on the ground, but some additional considerations need to be factored in before fully-electric planes can really take off.
Because an electric plane still needs to work on the principles of lift and thrust, the craft itself requires the right balance of weight and power. Electric power requires heavy batteries, making it challenging to achieve this balance. Thankfully, experts are hard at work figuring out how to overcome these challenges to make electric planes a reality for air travelers.
2. More Flights
Air travel continues to be one of the most popular forms of travel because of its efficiency. Despite overcrowded airports, an issue agencies like the FAA are working on, air travel remains one of the best methods of moving large numbers of people at the same time. It’s expected that airlines and airports will increase the number of flights taking place each year as new software innovations allow for better air traffic management.
3. Shorter Flights
Until relatively recently, air travel has been mostly reserved for long-haul flights, meaning flights that traveled great distances over the course of hours. As aviation technology has become more powerful and efficient, more options exist today for short-haul flights.
In the future, the ability to travel short distances, including across cities, using aircraft could become a reality. Technologies like vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) may also open up new locations for aircraft operations that were previously closed to pilots due to space restrictions.
