Besides units, one must also commander separately level up from Tier I (1) to Tier X (10).
Each Commander brings you 3 different abilities, with the 2nd and 3rd abilities only unlocking with Tier III (3) and Tier V (5) of the Commander.
You must also note that each commander specializes in a troop class. (In the example of Guan Yu = Glaive Infantry) Some abilities only work with certain troop classes! Keep that in mind!
At the beginning you have for all factions (except gladiators) however, only one of many commanders is available:
- China: Guan Yu (glaive infantry)
- Romans: Germanicus (heavy/light Infantry)
- Greece: Cynane (archers)
- Barbarians: Arminius (cavalry)
- Carthage: Hasdrubal (spears, cavalry)
You unlock new commanders primarily with the free experience (blue).
At the beginning you get comparatively very little of it, so use it sparingly.
The most beginner-friendly commander is "Germanicus" with Roman infantry at the beginning.
Otherwise, Guan Yu and the Chinese are very beginner-friendly, as they are generally quite well balanced and require less unit experience compared to other factions.
The difficulty of the Commander, on the other hand, is only of limited significance.
If you level up with one of your commanders in the tier, then you have to call up your skill tree via the "Ability Trees" tab. The higher your tier, the more talent points you get. You can use these talent points to upgrade your skills. You can also reset your choices, but choose wisely as not all skills can be fully upgraded. It is therefore often worth focusing on 1-2 skills.
