Hakeem Olajuwon has been a big part of the history of the NBA. He has played for 18 years in the league, leading the Houston Rockets to two NBA championships. Although he is most famous for his skills on the court, he has also made many accomplishments outside of basketball. Some of his most notable achievements include becoming the only player in history to win four MVP awards in a single season, winning the gold medal in the 1996 Olympic Games, and being enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Olajuwon was known for his ability to steal the ball and block shots. He is only one of five players in the history of the NBA to record more than 3,000 blocks. His career total is also the most by a center in league history, as well as the most by a player in the NBA. During his time in the NBA, Olajuwon played in 1238 games and finished his career with 26,946 points and 13,748 rebounds.
In his first 12 seasons in the NBA, Olajuwon averaged 1.9 steals and 3.5 blocks. During his championship years, he led the league in both of these categories. This includes the only player to win the Defensive Player of the Year award twice.
The Rockets had settled into mediocrity after the 1986 season, but Olajuwon took the team to new heights. Using his size and strength, he led the team to back-to-back NBA titles in 1994 and 1995. Having won the Finals MVP the previous year, he became the first player in league history to lead the league in rebounds, blocked shots and steals in the same season.
He was named an All-Star for the Western Conference four straight years, and he led the Rockets in 13 statistical categories in 1988. At age 39, he was not the same player he had been when he was younger. But he was determined to change his career. After requesting a trade, he joined the Toronto Raptors for the 2001-02 season, and eventually retired after one season.
Upon his retirement, he moved to a successful real estate business in Houston. Today, he is the seventh-richest player in the world, and his properties are steadily increasing in value. A life-sized statue of Olajuwon will be displayed in the new downtown arena when it opens in 2003-04.
He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of fame in 2008. He was also a member of the United States men's Olympic basketball team in 1996, and he was granted U.S. citizenship in 1996.
Olajuwon is the only player in NBA history to win four MVP awards in a season. He was named the best all-around center in the league in 1990. Despite missing time due to injuries in 1997-98, he returned to play a full schedule during the lockout season.
When he played for the Houston Rockets, Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon averaged 21.8 points, 11.9 rebounds and 3.09 blocks per game. He was also a three-time All-NBA Defensive Team member. Among his other notable achievements, he is the only player in NBA history to record more than 3,000 blocks and 2,000 steals.
