Conversations about veganism often contain more thought experiments than an Intro to Philosophy survey course. I’ve been trapped on deserted islands, I’ve had a gun pointed to my head with the demand to eat steak, I’ve met animals who are thrilled about the prospect of being slaughtered…

The thing is, none of these things has ever happened in real life. But these questions still get asked. Even though they’re absurd sometimes, they’re important, because they highlight underlying discomforts and assumptions about our relationship to other beings. So here goes.
